Laparoscopic Surgery – The Present and the Future

General Surgical procedures have been the gold standard for curing many health issues for more than a century.

In the recent past, Laparoscopy (Keyhole Surgery) has revolutionized the management of such patients giving them a great benefit in many ways.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery can be performed in nearly all the organs of the abdomen such as Gallbladder, Esophagus Stomach, Pancreas, Liver, Small & Large Intestines and Rectum.

Even the Gynecological surgeries involving Uterus & Ovary can be satisfactorily done by Laparoscopy.

This modality of surgical treatment has many advantages to the patient such as:

  1. Significantly less pain
  2. Great cosmetic advantage (5mm to 10mm skin cut)
  3. Fewer/No wound complications
  4. Lesser duration of stay in the hospital
  5. Minimal need for pain medication
  6. Early discharge from the hospital
  7. Early return to Work!

Laparoscopic surgery set-up is not universally available in all the hospitals. At Grecian, there is a good combination of Laparoscopic set-up and skilled Surgeons in this field to take good care of the patient.

Benign (Noncancer) & Cancer surgeries are regularly being performed at our center with a good postoperative result.

Also, Grecian MultiSpeciality Hospital has launched state of the art Bariatric Surgery Centre. For Obese patients, it’s a boon as the Obesity surgeries are offered at an affordable price for suitable patients.

Obesity is a major health problem in India & worldwide. Excess body weight is associated with many diseases and has a high incidence of poor health, cancer & death.  Bariatric surgery ( Laparoscopic) or obesity surgery is the only modality that provides significant sustained weight loss for morbidly obese (Body Mass Index >32.5) patients.

Who can undergo this surgery?

Any patient with a BMI of > 32.5 with Diabetes or >35 without, is a candidate for bariatric surgery.

Common surgeries performed:

Aim: Decreasing the size of the stomach (restrictive) and inducing malabsorption

1.Sleeve gastrectomy

  1. Roux -en -y gastric bypass
  2. Mini gastric bypass

These are Laparoscopic procedures which  are

quicker, with small incisions and carry lower complication rates and early discharge from the hospital.

Mini gastric bypass(MGB) is the newer advancement in laparoscopic bariatrics surgery.

How does it work?

Reduced stomach size makes the patient feel full sooner thereby limiting food intake.

And rerouting of intestines causes lesser absorption of calories.
