Heart Disease in Women

Not Just Men, Women Are Equally Prone to Heart Disease

It is a myth that women do not get heart disease or are less susceptible to heart attacks. After cancer, statistically, heart-related ailments are the second most important cause of deaths among women. During the child bearing age, the hormones do protect women from heart diseases but post-menopause women are equally susceptible.

The risk factors of heart diseases such as smoking, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity, and stress are all equally relevant to women as men. The modern woman today is overburdened with work in office and responsibilities at home. Increased stress leads to high blood pressure due to increase in adrenaline levels.
The symptoms of heart disease in women may be different from those in men. While typical compressing & squeezing chest pain that spreads to shoulders, arms & neck along with shortness of breath, sweating etc. may be reported by some women, others might experience upper abdominal pain, nausea, light-headedness, anxiety, palpitations & fatigue. These atypical symptoms should not be ignored. It is therefore prudent to get regular preventive cardiac checkups to detect the problem at an early stage and treat it accordingly.
